Abbott/Turnbull Government

Wit Oscar Wilde quipped – “To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.”

In less than one Parliamentary Term (< 3 years) the Liberal ‘Family’ has lost SIX viz.

This instability has meant that LNP not only have been  unable to achieve much, they have been barely able to even PROPOSE much  policy.

The only agility this Parliamentary mess have demonstrated is the uncanny knack of being able to leap-frog the carcasses of their fallen brethren.

Words – It is asserted (@StepenFry) that the average English word has 5 letters, so “words” is as good a place to start a new blog post as any.

“Otiose94” will be my occasional series of quite random thoughts (in both space & time). Here goes.

MP’s Rorts – Every day sees more & more examples of ‘dodgy’ claims for entitlements by Australian Federal MPs, beginning with the now ex-Speaker Bronwyn Bishop (BB) & THAT over-indulgent luxury helicopter ride to a Party Fundraiser from Melbourne CBD to Geelong, a trip much more easily & cheaply (cost tax-payers $5227) negotiated by many other means (Chauffeured Commonwealth Car?).

This extravagance has now cost BB the Speaker-ship & she looked somewhat less than contrite when she resumed her backbench  seat.

It has cost Prime Minister Abbott as well both because BB was another example of his abysmal record with ‘Captain’s Picks’ & his tardiness (tin-ear) in responding (~3wks) to the impending catastrophe which ensued from the obvious outrage from the public.

It s undeniable that Federal MPs exist in a rarefied atmosphere of Canberra political life where they are ‘available 24/7’ in theory, if not in practice. This voluntary discomfort does not excuse ‘rorting’ the system whenever they can.

It is instructive that BOTH major Parties are now desperately trying to ‘hose-down‘ the furore, because tit-for-tat accusations are MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction).

Unfortunately, this was not before ABC Insiders aired a very funny video.

More later.

Time to relax, rejuvenate, reflect. As the song says

He’s making a list, And checking it twice; Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice …

For various reasons, this year has been most ……….. disturbing!

First thoughts were to detail the long list of Government Bills passed (449) so far this year. That exercise seemed a tad excessive. Next I considered a reduced list of the most significant achievements eg Carbon Price, MRRT, NBN, NDIS, GONSKI….

This list too was beginning to grow to tedious proportions. Considering how to distil it even further, it suddenly struck me that most people are unaware and/or disinterested in this level of detail.

Asking the average voter to declare their perceptions of the past Parliamentary year would probably not give a tidy list of achievements, but rather a feeling of unease, of disturbance.

It’s the hangover from the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). The Liberals continue to insist the GFC never happened (a bit like Y2K), or if it did it was a fizzer (a damp squib).

They could have done very much better because they’re born and raised on the economics of the privileged.

It seems that they believe that having been born with oodles, somehow that grants a skill (and therefore a right) to being good with handling it; reasoning that defies logic. Ross Gittins (@1RossGittins) – Workers asked to pay for economy’s success.

Looking round the financial state of the rest of the developed world it is almost impossible to find a country doing better than Australia. But according to the ceaseless doom and gloom from the Opposition, our country’s going to ‘hell in a hand-basket’. Cacotopia.

This mind-numbing marinade is totally refuted by reference to our almost unique AAA credit rating and by many other economic indicators, the Beautiful Set of Numbers (see the BISONS).

As usual, Abbott, Hockey et al never let these facts get in the way of ‘A Good Story‘!

A Good Story, now there’s an interesting concept.

When was the last time you read a good story (apart from the Resources Boom in WA & QLD)? Even this has its down side if you choose to believe one of the coalition’s many pseudo money men, who bemoan the incredibly high Australian Dollar – $AUD.

The fact that the $AUD is currently $1.05-ish is wonderful if you’re

  • off to Bali (for Schoolies or your Annual vacation),
  • defying Gerry Harvey (and buying goodies from the Internet)
  • or buying an imported car

but the high dollar is killing our exports. Hence there is much talk of the two-speed economy, like it’s a second-hand Malvern Star treadly.

This two-speed jargon generates an ‘Us versus Them’ atmosphere. Like Clients not Patients in a hospital or Products not Services in a bank. Divide and Conquer.

A similar feeing to the ‘You’re either with us, or you’re against us‘ of G W Bush after 9/11 or John Howard’s Individual Bargaining. Gone is any sense of Community. It’s every individual for themselves.

This division of opportunities is what most leads to the disturbing feeling.

I’ll leave it to you to decide the most disturbing influence/person this year.

Therefore, my list is for Santa only!

Oh, and lots more Holiday Ham and Turkey, the meats, not the politicians (no names, no pack drill).

Happy Holidays!!

NB. Despicable Hockey.

Abbott’s Appalling Apathy

Justice Rares handed down his judgement on the Ashby matter, an attempted coup in most other non partisan media, classing it as ‘vexatious‘. The intent of the harassment claims (to unseat Slipper and hence the Government) failed, though any attempt to change the Government illegally is extremely serious, no matter which Party is in power.

Abbott knows this ‘in his guts’ and had organised to be on the other side of the world, ‘doing important things for the people of Australia’. Conveniently, it also put him almost beyond questioning on the involvement of Brough and other LNP members and associates, in setting Slipper up.

After almost 2 weeks of hiding overseas, and not reading the judgement, Apathetic Abbott has emerged to parrot the ‘Labor hyperventilating’ and ‘time to move on’ lines once more, neither of which go any way to answering vital questions.

After due consideration of Justice Rares judgement, Queensland Labor MP, Graham Perrett referred the matter to the Australian Federal Police and its Commissioner Tony Negus. The letter claims inter alia the Liberals possibly broke laws that prohibit harming a public official.

Finally it would appear that this saga is going to receive proper scrutiny.

Meanwhile all the other players named by Perrett have mysteriously disappeared. Has anyone seen, let alone heard from Brough, Pyne, Bishop J, Ashby, Doane or McArdle?

The appeal to Fair Work Australia ruse is designed as a delaying tactic, an attempt to deflect questions (under some flavour of a current Appeal) and to muddy the waters further. Ashby never even raised the supposed ‘harassment’ with the staff charged with mediating such matters. He, and others, sought to maximise the damage to Slipper and the Government by rushing off to Court.

Where’s Ashby’s (considerable) money coming from? As Woodward and Bernstein said in their now famous Watergate quote,

Follow the Money‘.

Fun Stuff

  • As of 23/12/2012 the blogger @AshbySlipper has only just finished tweeting the ENTIRE Rares Judgement (1600+ tweets) to @TonyAbbottMHR, to try to ensure he finally reads it! Well done!

Abbott’s Intentional ILLiteracy

Unusually the 2010 Federal election delivered a hung parliament ie equal numbers in the House of Representatives .

Intense negotiations with the disparate cross-bench saw Julia Gillard triumph, forming Government, becoming Prime Minister and consigning a very disappointed Tony Abbott to the Opposition benches. Harry Jenkins was appointed Speaker.

Time passed

A minority Government has many drawbacks, not the least of which is having to have all members fit and present in the chamber at all times. Against all precedent and tradition, the Liberals would only rarely provide ‘pairs‘, which would have allowed members to be absent on occasion to attend to other Parliamentary business. The Parliamentary Whip was extremely busy.

In an attempt to increase the Government’s numbers, Peter Slipper was seduced from the Liberals and became Speaker. As a result of accepting Government support to attain this position, he reduced the Coalition numbers by one, improved his garb and increased the buffer the Government had by one.

Around Parliament House, Peter certainly had long had a reputation for ‘uniqueness’ . Nothing specific, just ‘quirky’. His demeanour was tolerated by the Liberals/Nationals for many years (and elections). But the tolerance turned to enmity, and gained form and substance on his ascension to the Speaker’s Chair. This change was crucial in a hung Parliament. Abbott could no longer count on possibly toppling the Government in the case of them losing just one vote; eg Craig Thomson. Now he needed two, more than twice as difficult.

James Hunter Ashby was offered a job working for the new Speaker on 5 December 2011. After consulting various people, Ashby accepted the offer on 10 December 2011. At this stage. we can only speculate at what point and with what financial assistance and guidance, plotting commenced to de-robe the Speaker by ruining his reputation.

As a consequence of the court case Speaker Slipper, having had the details of some private but ‘fruity’ text messages revealed, resigns as Speaker, going to the cross-benches as an Independent. Given the background of the players that led to his resignation, it’s hard to see him being terribly sympathetic to the Coalition when voting in the future despite his many years representing them. A pyrrhic victory for all concerned. Current Fast forward to December 11 2012. Ashby’s sexual harassment case was classed as ‘vexatious‘ by Justice Rares and thown out, with court costs, unusually, being to awarded to the defendant Slipper, against Ashby.

Abbott decamped to the UK at or about the time of the court case. When eventually asked by journalists (who had ignored the case up till this point) to explain why he hadn’t commented on what was seen by some as an extremely important case. After trying to deflect attention by accusing the Government of ‘hyperventilating’, Abbott said he hadn’t read the judgement; deliberate illiteracy? If he said he hadn’t read it, he obviously felt he could not be questioned about its findings, especially regarding (according to Rares) the involved, Mal Brough.

Asked why, he said he’d been too busy ‘doing important things for the people of Australia”. Further when asked (words to the effect) what he knew about the lead up to the dismissed court case he said he had ‘No specific knowledge‘!

Some deemed this response ‘weasel words’, I prefer ‘mendacity’.

Could this happen here? Ashby must have an independent source of funds? Attempted sedition costs REAL money!

People (LNP) ducking questions on possible involvement in the ‘vexatious’ Ashby court case by using the ‘an appeal is in train’ statement or similar are waffling. So far (as of noon Friday 14 December) there is NO appeal. Therefore the excuse is demonstrably specious.

.Abbott et al must be pursued and forced to answer questions of National Importance. Surely plotting to topple a duly Elected Government qualifies as sedition? No one in the MSM, apart from Lenore Taylor, seem capable of objective journalism.

Attempts by Brandis, Hockey, Bishop et al to try and dismiss justifiable questions as ‘hyperventilating’ (big words turn many off) by aggrieved Government spokes people is ludicrous, hypocritical and deliberately used to avoid giving answers. This is especially true in view of the ceaseless and baseless AWU accusations.

On a vital, separate but related issue viz the ‘missing 10 hours because computers were down’ excuse is expertly debunked in a post by blogger @sortius. Social Media (SM) strikes again!

Again the Main Stream Media (MSM) has utterely failed to keep pace with Social Media (SM) and it’s strength in numbers. Legitimate parallels can be drawn to the combined power of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), and their approach to processing an immense volume of data. ?The combined power (180k+) of distributed personal computers is much more powerful than any single mainframe. Similarly the combined expertise, observation, resources and research capability of SM is simply awesome!

When Godwin Grech and Utegate first raised email ‘evidence’, i observed the combined talent etc of the Poll Bludger blog completely destroy the so called evidence, within 3 hours.
